US Open Winners

The US Open signals the end of summer and the year's Grand Slam tournaments in men's and women's tennis. Today, the hard courts at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center ensure a fast, exciting style of play every year; winners of the US Open automatically ascend into the ranks of tennis legends.

Men's record holders

In the professional era, on the men's side Switzerland's Roger Federer holds the record for consecutive singles titles, winning every year from 2004 through 2008. Americans Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras also boast five US Open titles; Connors is the only man to win on grass, clay and the hard court. Richard Sears, William Larned and Bill Tilden all won seven championships in the amateur era, but Sears and Larned won a number of theirs when past champions only had to win one match to defend the title.

Women's record holders

Chris Evert has won the most US Open titles since professionals were allowed into the tournament in 1968, with six. Molla Bjurstedt Mallory is the all time record holder, with eight titles. Chris Evert won titles on both clay and the DecoTurf hard surface; no woman won on all three surfaces, including grass.

Other notable winners

Today, the main court at Flushing Meadows is named Arthur Ashe Stadium. Ashe won the first tournament in the Open era, after professionals were allowed to play. Ivan Lendl and John McEnroe both won three times in a row in the Open era.

There are innumerable stories behind every US Open winner and his or her journey to a Grand Slam win. In the weeks around Labor Day each year in Queens, more stories are spun.
