Tennis Racquet Tensions

Understanding the tension of your tennis racquet is even more important than which frame you select. Many people do not realize how the way a racquet is strung can affect their game. String tension has a direct impact on swing power and control of the ball. Most racquets are capable of accepting string tensions that are typically between 58 to 68 pounds.

Less tension

Lower tensions produce a more powerful swing and exert less stress on your arm. With lower string tension, the ball is in contact with the racquet for a greater period of time. This yields a more robust swing. Unfortunately, this also reduces control of the ball. Since the ball spends a greater amount of time in contact with racquet, minute changes in the racquet's position can affect the ball's trajectory. During gameplay, the ball is only in contact with the racquet for a fraction of a second, so there is not enough time for your brain to process that information and prevent these minor fluctuations.

More tension

Stringing your racquet on the higher end of the recommended limit gives you noticeably better control of the ball and increased spin. If you enjoy aiming close to the lines, a more tightly strung racquet can yield the best results. Tighter racquets can have a negative effect of creating additional pressure on your arm.

Restringing your racquet

A general rule of thumb is that you should restring your racquet as many times a year as you play during the typical week. For example, if you play three times a week, restring your racquet three times per year. No matter how little you play, it is recommended that your racquet is restrung at least twice a year. Choosing not to restring does not damage the racquet, but the strings can lose responsiveness. Never exceed the racquet's recommended range of tensions. Applying excessive tension can void your racquet's warranty and warp the frame.

A racquet's string tension is a matter of personal preference that is based on your style of play and your body's needs. If you have experienced arm injuries, a racquet with less tension is beneficial, but for tighter gameplay choose high tension stringing. Selecting the right string tension can improve any player's ability.
